Kauai Adventure: Action & Memories

In late August 2016, our big family trip took us to Kauai: myself, my wife, our kids, both sets of parents, an aunt and uncle, and my future son-in-law. We stayed in a beachfront vacation home near Poipu. No air conditioning and mostly rocky beaches, but the location made it incredible—lessons in adapting to imperfect conditions, and still thriving.

Poipu became a perfect base for both action and relaxation. We tried Uncle’s Shave Ice (blue raspberry will turn everything blue—be prepared!), browsed the local market, and explored the area.

Adventure-wise, we ziplined with Koloa Zipline. As someone afraid of heights, the first short line eased my fear, then the longer lines became pure adrenaline and fun. We also braved the freezing irrigation canals on Kauai Backcountry’s Mountain Tubing Adventure, learning to embrace discomfort while laughing and making new friends.

And of course, we found the Na Pali Coast’s best shave ice—root beer with sweetened condensed milk. A simple indulgence that reminded me to savor small moments.

Kauai taught me that travel—like preparedness—is about adaptation, decision-making, and making memories despite challenges. Embrace the unexpected.
