Type 2 Diabetes — Insulin Dependent / Ketosis History

🚨 STEP 1 — IS THE PERSON CONSCIOUS?

✅ YES     → Go to Step 2: Blood Glucose Check

❌ NO

  • Call local emergency services immediately

  • Check airway & breathing

  • Place in recovery position

  • Administer Insta Glucose Paste between gum and cheek

  • Prepare for urgent evacuation

🩸 STEP 2 — CHECK BLOOD GLUCOSE

🔻 BELOW 70 mg/dL (LOW)    → Go to Step 3: Hypoglycemia

✅ 70–250 mg/dL

  • Monitor symptoms

  • Encourage fluids + electrolytes, a piece of hard candy

  • Recheck if symptoms change

🔺 ABOVE 250 mg/dL (HIGH)

→ Go to Step 4: Ketosis Risk Path

🍬 STEP 3 — HYPOGLYCEMIA (LOW BLOOD SUGAR)

  1. Give Suagry drink or hard candy

    • Glucose tabs or gel

  2. Wait 15 minutes

  3. Recheck blood glucose

  4. Repeat once if still <70 mg/dL

⚠️ If unable to swallow or mental status declines:
→ Administer  Insta Glucose Paste between gum and chee
→ Call emergency services

🔥 STEP 4 — HYPERGLYCEMIA / KETOSIS RISK

If BG >250 mg/dL:

  1. Check ketones immediately

  2. Begin hydration (oral rehydration or electrolytes)

  3. Administer insulin per prescribed plan

  4. Rest in shade / cool environment

🚨 RED FLAGS (ANY = EVACUATE)

  • Ketones present

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Confusion or fatigue

  • Rapid or deep breathing

  • Fever or signs of infection

History of ICU-level ketosis = LOW threshold for evacuation
