Viva Las Vegas: Finding Your Way Off the Beaten Path
Most people either love Las Vegas or hate it. For us? Somewhere in the middle. We enjoy the city, but anyone who’s ventured beyond the tourist zones knows it can get rough fast. That doesn’t stop us from exploring—but it does teach a lesson: knowing where to go and how to navigate unfamiliar terrain matters.
Over 20+ years of Vegas visits, we’ve explored the Strip, wandered Fremont, and even poked around the surrounding desert. Yet we’ve never hit the Valley of Fire—a reminder that even with experience, there’s always more to learn and explore. One constant? We never stay in the same hotel twice. Change is the only guarantee, and being adaptable is key.
People often ask, “Do you prefer the Strip or Fremont?” The answer is both—and here’s why:
The Strip: Nonstop entertainment, world-class food, and big-city energy. Perfect if you’re planning to immerse yourself fully, but increasingly pricey and crowded.
Fremont: A more laid-back vibe, free concerts, people-watching, and hidden thrills—like seeing zipliners soar past your hotel window.
These days, we base ourselves in Fremont, hop to the Strip for a night or two, and always stay alert for local deals. The lesson: flexibility and situational awareness pay off.
On our most recent trip, we passed through on the way to Lake Havasu. A restaurant we loved was closed. We improvised, explored nearby streets, and stumbled upon a hidden gem: Lazy Dog. Candied bacon? Incredible. Service? Top-notch. The burger? The best we’ve ever had.
The takeaway for any adventure—or life in general—is simple: don’t stay confined to the obvious paths. Seek out the hidden gems, pay attention to your surroundings, and be ready to pivot when the plan changes. You’ll be rewarded far more than sticking to the expected routes.
