Maui 2015: Planning, Patience, and the Sunrise That Changed Everything
Over 21 years ago, my wife and I honeymooned in Maui. For our 20th anniversary, we promised ourselves a return—and we made it happen. We’d visited a few times in between, but this trip was special, not just for the milestone, but for the experiences we intentionally sought out.
This time, we stayed in Sugar Beach instead of our usual Lahaina spot. Budget-friendly? Yes. But it turned out to be a win: centrally located, friendly resort staff, and it “forced” us to explore a part of the island we hadn’t visited before. The water was a bit murkier than Lahaina, which meant extra caution for Tiger Sharks—but we still swam and enjoyed it safely. Sometimes constraints create opportunities to discover something new.
One of our long-standing goals had been to watch the sunrise at Haleakala. In past trips, the 2 a.m. wake-up kept us from doing it. This time, we committed. Being on top of the mountain at over 10,000 feet, freezing in 33-degree wind, and sharing the moment with thousands of other visitors—it was humbling. I’m not a “spiritual” guy, but the experience grounded me. My usual vacation stress melted away that first day.
Preparation made the difference: warm layers, blankets from the hotel, and planning the timing carefully ensured the experience was enjoyable, not miserable. This is a lesson that resonates far beyond vacation—planning, adaptability, and a willingness to push yourself a little can transform the outcome of any challenge.
We balanced active days with relaxation: exploring Lahaina, visiting the iconic Banyan Tree, strolling Front Street, and revisiting Betty’s Beach Cafe—our little tradition. We even added a few “touristy” experiences: a sunset dinner cruise on our anniversary and checking out the Maui Aquatic Center. Though I couldn’t swim with sharks without certification, I appreciated the thrill—and my wife’s sarcastic offer to improvise one reminded me to always find humor in the unexpected.
Our evenings often ended on the beach under the stars, using an app to identify constellations. Simple, intentional planning created moments of wonder that cost nothing but time and attention.
By the last day, we revisited Haleakala for sunrise once more—a full-circle moment that reinforced the value of preparation, patience, and fully embracing the experiences we planned.
This trip reminded me that adventure isn’t just about the destination; it’s about how you approach it. Thoughtful planning, flexibility, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone can turn ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.
Aloha!
