Our Rescue Rottweiler has Rescued Me

After deciding to stay in Washington, it took about 8-9 months of house hunting and offers in the stupid crazy housing market. We finally SETTLED on a place that would do for awhile ‘til shit calms down and we can get what we want.

Well, one day my wife sorta surprised me. We had been talking about getting a pitbull puppy for a while. She knows I like pits…and Rotts. Our friend Sara works for the local police department, and she called Jahanel, told her they just got a rescue dog in that was sweet as can be. A Rottweiler! So my wife went down to pick up Ruby for a “weekend trial run”.

You could say it’s been a long weekend, about a 9 month long weekend, and I’m not giving her back! Ruby is a sweetheart of a dog! She came from a kill shelter in southern Cali, to a family up here, who couldn’t deal with her. We picked her up as a 3.5 year old, housebroken, and mellow-tempered love bug.

I can play fight with her and she’ll sound super aggressive and intimidating, but as soon as I mess up and hit a wrist bone or something on her tooth and say, “ouch,” she immediately stops. She will even look at me like, “I’m sorry, are you alright?” If I get up and walk away, she goes and lays down, looking sad, but if I say the word, she can get right back into playing.

What an awesome dog, I couldn’t be happier with her. Well, in the beginning, her farts would clear the house. Hell, maybe even the neighborhood…..

We took her out for a trip in the Jeep up to Capitol Peak. She did real well until we got to the mud run, then her doggie anxiety kicked in. This 100 lbs Rottweiler got out of the back of the Jeep, climbed up over the center console, and onto my wife’s lap. You ever see 100 pound lap dog?

She did, however, love the snow. Being from California and snow not being a guarantee in Western Washington, this may have been her first time seeing it!

Update - 4 years later

It's been 4 years since we got Ruby, and I have to say, I don't know how I will be able to replace her when she leaves. She has been the best, most loyal and fun dog we have ever been honored to host a home for. She's getting too old to jump up into the Jeep, so I have to pick her fat ass up, but it's worth it. She enjoys "going bye bye"!
